Nautical Necklace DIY
July 9th, 2010 @ 10:52 am
I made this nautical inspired necklace for the 4th of July weekend. Here is the “how to”:
You need:
- rope (I found it in the ribbon area at Hobby Lobby. I wanted a “middle” size, but they only had large and small, so I braided the small ones together.)
- ribbon in the color of your choosing
- charms (I used nautical wine drink marker charms from Pottery Barn b/c they were on sale and so cute)
- scissors
If you are using the small rope and want to braid it, cut three pieces the same size then secure by tying together and taping to a table, or tying to a knob or even your toe. Braid the length of the rope.
Tie a knot at the end of the braid.
At one end of the braid, tie the ribbon near the knot. If you want a bow, leave enough room on the side to tie it.

Then measure how long you want your necklace to be, and tie the other end of the ribbon to the other end of the braid.

I am wearing mine wrapped around twice, with the ribbon and bow on the side.
You could also leave the necklace as is and tie a knot near the bottom and wear without charms.
Next, add your charms randomly around the braid. I hooked mine in the braid with a ring. You could attach your charms with ribbon or string. I also added another ribbon bow on the other side. There are many different variations on how you could make your necklace. If you make one, I would like to see it!
Have a great weekend!
